Phil Hammerslough, Outreach
Bicycling has been a passion for Phil since early childhood. Early on, he led bike trips for American Youth Hostel and found out just how far one could ride and the impact it had on how one sees the world.
In 1970, Phil joined Ski Rack in Burlington, VT and became a co-owner, responsible for introducing the latest bike technologies and developing bike clinics. In 1972 he became co-director of Vermont Bicycle Touring, leading trips, maintaining the bike fleet and researching new routes.
By the beginning of the 1990's, Phil began to work with Local Motion to develop the Island Trail Line and promote bicycling in Burlington. He was one of the first board members for Local Motion and continues to have close ties with the organization.
Phil has continued his bike advocacy, organizing the BTV Burlington Bikefest, which features trikes, velomobiles, recumbent and electric bikes as a way for people to understand the wide variety of types and uses of bicycles for various modes of transportation. Additionally, Phil has worked with Local Motion, the Burlington Walk/Bike Council, DPW and the Parks Department, to established Valet Bike parking now servicing many of Burlington’s events.
Known for his consistent and ongoing commitment to promote bicycling in all its forms as a primary mode of transportation, Phil states that “bicycling is the glue that will tie us together and gets us outside the steel and glass bubbles of our cars.”
